Update 4/15/09
Discovered I had two different versions of the Drake family story. I deleted the older of the two, which was missing a new research discovery.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Update 2/22/09
A message to Donna Smith: I tried to e-mail you back but it got returned with the error message that your address is no longer accepting e-mails due to an extended period of inactivity. I would gladly accept all information you can provide on current and past generations. If you can provide me the name of the father of Roy Eichlin (b.1886) then your family would likely be included in the tree charts. Currently your branch is unconnected though I am certain that Roy's father is one of the people already in the database. I'm just not sure which one.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Update 12/31/08
Added the link Old PA Birth Certificates Online? in support of this movement.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/29/08
Added the Odds and Ends section to the main menu. The odds and ends section will be used to put any information that doesn't really fall into one of the main categories. I will be adding to this section a brief story on the accidental death of two Kunsman from Northampton County. Both fell to their deaths while doing home renovation work in Monroe county. The accidents occurred over 100 years apart.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/28/08
Finished off a few minor edits today. At this time the site should be fully functional. Keep in mind that the GRAMPS database has been discontinued so you will no longer find it. Please e-mail me with any other broken links you may find. E-mail is rhh@kunsman-eichlinREMOVETHIS.net. Delete the letters REMOVETHIS before sending.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/21/2008
Reactivated the Military page and all links contained in it. Site is about 80% repaired now and I am on schedule for completing this project by the end of this week. Added 404 error re-directing since the number of 404 errors is expected to be large due to the site re-design.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/19/08
Reactivated the Photographs main page and all links on the Photographs page.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/18/08
Reactivated the following links/pages:
Ancestor Charts, Descendant Reports, Descendant Trees, Family Briefs, Feature Stories, Introduction, Links, and Maps. More to come...
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/16/08
A few months ago the site was hacked and infected with a virus. It appears entry was made at the server end and not from my PC. I took the site down at that time and I was on the fence as to if I would fix it. I have been assured by my web hosting company, Globat, LLC, that they have enhanced security measures in place now and another attack is highly unlikely. With that assurance I have begun the long and laborious process of rebuilding the site. As of today I have put the Database back up. There will be no photos yet or any other stories or charts. All of this I will phase in over the next week or two. It is likely there will be numerous bugs and bad links for a time. Do not e-mail me yet about dead links and problems with the site. When I have finished the re-build I will announce I am finished in this update section and at that time will seek your input on specific issues with the site. For now the vast majority of the site will not work right. I am scanning every bit of data for viruses before I upload anything. Rest assured all safety measures are being taken on my end to prevent re-infection (I have always maintained the most current virus protection on my PC).
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 11/1/07
Updated the GRAMPS database.
Updated the Introduction to include information on how to use the GRAMPS database.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/23/07
Made the names in the Revolutionary War page active links to the new GRAMPS database. When I started this web site 3 years ago the names in the Revolutionary War page were linked to my RootsWeb database. When I stopped participating in the RootsWeb project I made it (Revolutionary War page) just a list of names that were not linked to anything. The reason I did this is because the BK6 format database creates new and different URL's for people in the database every time I update it. I would have had to update all of the links in the Revolutionary War page every time I updated the BK6 database. This was a major drawback to the BK6 format which is otherwise pretty darn good. Now enter GRAMPS, which keeps the same URL's for people in the database no matter how many times you update it. This is a major advantage over BK6 and may lead me to eventually use GRAMPS exclusively to create the web based database. I will always use BK6 to maintain my data. It is far superior to anything else out there, but GRAMPS html output beats BK6 in many critical ways. I'm still learning GRAMPS and there are some other lower level things that it doesn't do the BK6 does do so I will give it more time before deciding. In the end I may just end up maintaining both web based databases and use BK6 to edit and add data.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/18/07
Tweaked the new database format a bit and got rid of some of the bugs. The gedcom no longer lists itself as a source. The ancestor tree now has 5 generations. The dates are formatted the way I prefer DD-Mth-YYYY. The surname list is now formatted correctly. Previously it was having trouble properly sorting surnames in parenthesis. All photos are now embedded in the narrative section. The Gramps format appears to be superior to Brother's Keeper 6 in many ways. Unlike BK6, when I update the Gramps database the URL's for individuals and families will not change - they will always be the same allowing for permanent bookmarks. The notes display in the narrative section, no need to click on a link for notes as you must in BK6. In short all of the data is displayed before you on one page. The ancestor trees are links that make navigating the database far more intuitive than BK. I am very close to deciding to use Gramps exclusively. If you are looking for Gramps to use on your computer I am almost sure that as of this date it is only available for the Linux operating system. There may be a beta Windows version available that from what I have heard is still very buggy.
This update also includes a few additions and corrections to the database making it more current than the BK6 data.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/6/07
It's a long story but I have found a new database program called Gramps. With this program I believe I have created a far superior website database. I am still using Brother's Keeper as my primary genealogy program and then I export the Gedcom to Gramps. With the Gramps generated database the following features are available:
- When you click on links for places or sources you are taken for a page that shows all data connections to that place or source. For example if you click on the birthplace for someone born in Easton, PA a page will open up listing everyone in the database born in Easton. If you click on any of the sources it will open up a page listing every person/event that is connected with that source.
- At the bottom of the page is an ancestry tree chart for the person listed.
I have a few bugs to work out yet. I tried to write HTML code for a back link on each page but it didn't work. The gedcom I created to make the database ends up listed as a source for every page. This happens automatically so I don't see any way around it. For now I plan on having both databases up and running. I'll see what comments I get and monitor traffic to decide if I should eliminate the old format. Let me know what you think of the new database. Email rhh@kunsman-eichlinREMOVETHIS.net
Click here to go directly to the new database.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Update 9/18/07
Updated the primary database with new research completed since 6/13/07.
Updtaed the links page - checked for links that no longer worked and either deleted them or made them inactive.
I was getting inundated with SPAM so I changed my e-mail address and changed the format with which it is presented. When you click on my e-mail link it will launch your e-mail software with a default "To" address of rhh@kunsman-eichlinREMOVETHIS.net. Remove the word REMOVETHIS before clicking on send.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 9/6/07
Added the Kunsman Furniture - Thomas Kunsman feature story. No significant updates to the main database at this time. When I update the database the Kunsman Furniture feature will be linked from the family group pages of Jacob, his daughter Elizabeth, and his brother Thomas.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 6/13/07
Updated the primary database which is now over 10,000 people. Again I remind everyone that the database update in some cases changes the URL of some families. If you had book marked a family previously the URL may no longer work. If that happens simply go back to the name index and look up the family member again.
Removed the family reunion page. After having it posted for over 3 months one person expressed an interest. Certainly not enough to be worth further consideration.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 3/20,2007
Added a page to determine the level of interest in a family reunion for either the Eichlin or Kunsman families.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 3/18/2007
Updated all of the Descendants Reports with the latest data.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 3/7/2007
Well it's been quite a long time since the last update. There are a number of reasons for the delay but the main one is I built a new computer. When re-installing all of my web authoring and genealogy software I could not find my Dreamweaver CD. This software goes for about $200 so I wasn't going to rush out and buy it again. After several months having given up on finding it I downloaded a trial version so I could do this latest update. The trial is only good for 30 days so eventually I will need to purchase the software again. I've spent the past several months obtaining death certificates and through doing so found a number of assumptions I had made were incorrect. I had my Bachman line all wrong and it has been fixed. I found yet another Raub connection to our family. I also discovered my great grand parents Stephen and Sabina (Unangst) Kunsman were 2nd cousins (their grandfathers were brothers) through the Hoover line. The specific updates are as follows:
Updated the entire database which has grown by about 150 people since the November update. More importantly several errors were corrected in my direct family lines. Scores of new obituaries have been added in the notes links in individual family group pages.
Updated a few Ancestor Fan charts.
Updated a few Descendant Tree charts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 1/5/2007
Changed the Ancestor Charts from tree type to fan type. Updated each Ancestor Fan Chart with the latest data. The Helen Bachman chart may soon change again as I am expecting a death certificate in a few weeks that may clear up who the father of William Bachman is.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 12/3/2006
Discovered 4 of the descendant tree charts were not properly formatted and repaired them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 11/29/2006
Added an interesting article published in RootsWeb Review about identity theft and online genealogy data.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 11/15/2006
Fixed broken links to the Bibliography .
It seems I was able to get around the problem I was having with the tree charts hanging my .pdf program. I am at least at the point where sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. I haven't been able to determine how to make it work each time. The large tree charts for Peter Ealer and Hans Eichlin are back up and I'll soon combine Peter and Hans Raub again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 11/12/2006
Updated the database with new research completed since October 15th. The database is now at over 9700 people, up about 400 from the October 15th update.
Updated all of the Descendant Reports with the most recent data. These reports are now exclusively in .pdf format. It is so much more easy and convenient for me to create the .pdf files vs. creating them in html format. Using the .pdf format will mean I will update them more often in light of that convenience.
Updated some of the Descendant Trees. I am running into a problem in that some of the charts are too large and generate errors when I try to create them. I need to find a solution to this.
Added 2 photos to the Historic Photos page - both panoramic photos from the National Archives.
Added several new photos to the Kunsman photos section.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/25/2006
Disabled the Musicians page. I was unable to put together enough data to achieve my original vision for this page. I may attempt it again in the future but for now I have no immediate plans to further develop the musicians page.
Added several new photos to the Kunsman photo page.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 10/22/2006
Edited the Descendant Trees page to include the names of spouses. Deleted the Peter Ealer chart as it was too big and was hanging the .pdf creation software. This is a incompatibility issue with Brother's Keeper which generates large charts in stages, between stages it would hang the .pdf creator. As a compromise I stepped down one generation and created a chart for Abraham Ealer, a direct ancestor of my wife. I separated the Hans and Peter Raub charts so I could show their individual spouses names in the link section. I am continuing the obituary search project and will update the web site periodically. The Descendant Trees will be updated more often since it is a quick and easy update of one file vs. the creation of over 8,000 new files when I update the main database.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 10/17/2006
Updated most of the Descendant Reports in a format that excluded my notes and sources. I did this to streamline the format of the reports which could become confusing to follow with my notes scattered through out. If you want to see sources and notes go to the name index and click on that person. That will open a family group sheet that will have all of my notes and sources.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 10/15/2006
Updated the database with new research completed since July 22nd. The database now has nearly 9300 people in it. That number is up about 500 from the July update. I now have access to Heritage Quest and I am currently working on expanding data on present generations on all lines via Obituaries. I am also beginning to send for Death Certificates for all of my direct ancestors. Updated some of the Descendant Trees to include new research. Updated the Bibliography.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/26/06
Rewrote the introduction to include less history on the development of my research and more information on how to use and get the most out of this web site.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/21/06
Updated the Bibliography and changed it to .pdf format. The sources had not been updated in nearly a year. The URL's in the sources are now active links. If you click on them it will take you to that web address if it still exists.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/20/06
Compressed and OCR'd the 1959 Laubach Store catalog using CVista pdf Compressor. This software is incredible. It compressed my pdf's about 90% from 23MB down to about 2.5MB. On top of that it performed a very accurate OCR and now the catalog pages are fully searchable. This software sells for nearly $600, way out of my price range. I used the trial version which leaves a watermark of their logo across the bottom of the page, an unfortunate but necessary evil. If you do allot of work with PDF files and can afford it I highly recommend this software.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/19/06
Fixed a few errors with yesterday's update.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/18/06
Added the story of Laubach's store which will be linked in several different ways.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/9/06
Added the Descendant Tree Charts. This was a project I had long anticipated because I think visitors to this site will really enjoy the ability to visualize their relationship to common ancestors and distant cousins.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/7/2006
Finally I figured out a way to display my charts. I updated the Ancestor Charts in .pdf format. Coming soon and after a long wait will be the Descendant Charts. I have been looking for a way to do them so they could be easily updated. I have found it thanks to a little free program that I highly recommend called CutePDF . Your computer sees this program as a printer and anything you print to it is output in .pdf format. It is absolutely awesome and absolutely free. It's not as full featured as the full version of Adobe Acrobat but if you don't have $200 to dish out to Adobe it's a very viable alternative. Look for another update in a few days announcing the availability of Descendant Charts. This is going to be a terrific addition to the site.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 8/29/2006
Redesigned the Historic Photos section and added about 8 new photos. Removed a few of the poorer quality photos. The navigation of the photo section has been improved and the Jpeg's are embedded into a web page.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 8/8/2006
Edited the Eichlin story to include new information on the Eichling line. Info provided by Paul Eichling.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 8/6/2006
Edited the Drake story to include new information obtained from Pearce Fox Drake's obituary.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 7/30/2006
Edited the ancestor chart of Mabel Susanna Nicholas to include George Nicholas's father/mother Daniel and wife Christinna.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 7/22/06
Updated the database which now has over 8800 people, up about 400 from the March update. If you had book marked a database page you may need to update your book mark. When I update the database it changes the web addresses of some of the families/individuals. It's best to go to the name index and look up the person and make a new book mark.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 5/10/2006
Added the Drake story. Edited some of the Historic Photos and embedded them in a web page rather than linking the raw jpeg.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 4/13/2006
Added about 8 new photos to the Historic Photos section.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 3/16/2006
Updated the database which now has over 8400 people, up about 200 from the December update. If you had book marked a database page you may need to update your book mark. When I update the database it changes the web addresses of some of the families/individuals. It's best to go to the name index and look up the person and make a new book mark.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 1/31/2006
Altered the access of most maps so that they are imbedded into a web page instead of viewing the raw jpeg. This will allow me to better track and understand what people want to see in the map section.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 1/14/2006
Edited the Eichlin story to include new/updated info.
Removed the message board. It wasn't getting used so it became increasingly unlikely that I would check for new messages. If you want to send me a message use e-mail.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 1/3/2006
Edited the Bibliography list with the most current info and formatted it for easier reading. I tried to make all of the URL's active links via software automation but something went wrong and each link actually linked you to the next URL above the one you were clicking on. While it would have been great to have the URL's active I just don't have the time to manually code each URL. Edited the Herbert Eichlin story to include a new research discovery of an account of burying records on Bataan.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 12/28/2005
Updated the database which now has 8200 people, up about 300 from the last update the end of October.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 11/17/2005
Added about 10 new photos to the Kunsman - Nicholas photo section.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 10/30/2005
Edited the Ancestor charts of Marion Drake and Sybil Cobb to include new research. Still working on ancestor tree charts, hope to have up soon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 10/29/2005
Updated the database which now has 7,913 people, up about 400 from the last update in July. Fixed most of the formatting problems with the sources though some still exist. The software I'm using for some reason and only on some URL's adds and extra character in the HTML output. The link looks OK but when you click it there is an extra character in the URL. It only does this on some addresses and I can recognize no pattern other than it seems to be more common with long URL's.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 9/3/2005
Added the message board. Need to fine tune appearance but it is up and working perfectly.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 8/31/2005
Added the Raubsville Ferry Article and Map.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 8/29/2005
Added 3 new maps to the Map page; 1874 Bingen, Leithsville, and Lower Nazareth Twp., all in Northampton Co., PA. Edited the Edwin Henninger feature to include new images and sources which were left out of the original version.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 8/28/2005
Added the feature article on Maj. Herbert Eichlin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 8/7/2005
Activated the Good, Bad, and the Ugly link. Fine tuned some appearance issues and links on various pages. I believe the links that were corrupted from moving the site are about 99.9% fixed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 7/31/2005
Added my feature article on Edwin Henninger
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 7/30/2005
I believe I now have the navigation fixed. This was corrupted when I moved the sight. Some of the links still take you to my old WorldConnect database at rootsweb. Users should simply hit the back button to return to the kunsman-eichlin.net sight.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on 7/21/2005
Updated my database with new info on Edwin Henninger, who committed murder and suicide in October of 1922.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 7/16/2005
Moved the sight from Rootsweb to my own domain. Continue to update and repair the sight. Added a new database format. I'm not completely happy with it but it was a necessary compromise at this time. Most of the dead links are fixed now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 6/7/05
Began redesign of the entire site... again. Trying to give the site a more artistic look. Eliminated the Guest Book, after over 1000 visitors and over 3000 page views only 4 people had used it. Cleaned up the directories - deleted no longer used files.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 5/28/05
Added and activated my WWI and WWII page link which is accessed via the military link off my main page.

Updates on 1/23/2005
I moved my Music page link from my other interests section to the Main Menu. I started to realize that music is one of the defining traits of our family that goes back generations. Starting with myself and other family members I will write short biographies and when possible include samples of their music. I will need to re-write the navigation bars in many of the other pages to complete this change.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Updates on 12/15/04
Edited the Raub Family History page to reflect recent new clues to the parents of Jacob M. Raub b.1771. Did some new compression on my map images. I was able to radically compress them with very minimal quality loss by using Photo Shop's triple scan option on jpeg compression. For example my largest map file was previously 27.8 MB and is now 2.7 MB.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 11/19/04
Edited the guest book signature page to remove questions about the election and political affiliation.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 11/6/04
- Finished re-doing most of the web site using Dream Weaver software. This resulted in shrinking the size and download time of the average page by over 50%. Originally I had designed the entire site using Microsoft Word (easy to use but horribly inefficient).
- I also added the Civil War Recruitment Posters page in the Civil War section.
- Using "Image Mapping" I gave some of the photos in the site the ability to link to other data. When you float the mouse pointer over certain parts of an image and the pointer morphs into a human hand shaped pointer you can left click and you will be linked to other data relevant to that part of the image. Try this out on my Civil War page with the photo of the Officers of the 153rd Regiment - Company F.
- The Photographs section was completely re-designed. It is now broken down into family group names and each page has thumbnail images and description details. I added several new photos bringing the total number online to about 107. The re-design should also result in more search hits on this part of the site.
- To my database I added new research on the Nicholas and Laubach families. I greatly expanded the Bucks County Nicholas line but was unable to connect my George Nicholas. I am certain that one day I will.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 11/2/04
I am in the process of re-doing the entire site using Dream Weaver software. Until I finish you may encounter some problems accessing some areas of the site. I hope to be finished by the end of the week.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 10/17/04
Added the Lehigh River Gorge page to my Biking Page. It includes photos and a description of this awesome trail. I also re-did the site navigation, this time going for the 'old school' links inside of [brackets] style. I did this out of the belief that visitors will instantly recognize and feel comfortable using the navigation links.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 10/13/04
Updated my WorldConnect database with new Saffel info. Many thanks to Tami Rivera. My database now has 6,631 individuals all compiled and entered by hand over the past 7 years. While I have in some cases used other people's work I have not added it to mine via automation. Each bit of information was looked at, scrutinized, corrected, reliability rated, sourced, ect. before I typed in each piece of information. (Some earlier work may still be missing sources).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates on 10/8/04
Added the story of cousins Dr. Abraham Stout and Capt. Lucius Q. Stout to my Civil War page. This is an interesting story of this Civil War family from Williams Township. I included many actual newspaper images regarding stories involving Dr. Stout.

Tuned graphics to address the issue of slow loading pages for dial-up users. My test have shown about a 50% improvement in speed when downloading the Main page and the Photographs page. As for the actual photographs I have no intention of changing anything. I will not shrink the size or go to lower resolution. The large size enables end users to print a quality hard copy if they chose. Going low resolution would make the pictures look poor both on screen and when printing a hard copy.
