Easton Library - 1905

Photo of the Easton Library as it appeared in 1905. The building was constructed on the old German burying ground. Most of the graves were relocated to other cemeteries. Two graves, those of Mammy Morgan and William Parsons, were relocated on the library grounds. Though not an attorney Mammy Morgan, widow of a Revolutionary War captain, was very knowledgeable in matters of law and her advice was often sought in resolving disputes. Parsons is considered one of the founding fathers of Easton and was a key figure in the planning of the city. His tomb is visible in the photo just off the lower right corner of the building. Today the beautiful arched entry way has been bricked over and made part of the building facade. In 1968 the building was expanded to the right and included a new entrance. The addition made use of a completely different construction style, the old and new sections do not compliment each other in my view. I hope there was a good reason they destroyed the old entrance. Perhaps the arch had become unstable or some other safety concern developed. As you can see in this photo it was quite spectacular and if you get a chance to see it today you too would be asking why these steps lead to a brick wall. On the Library's web site there is a photo of the building that I would esitmate was taken about 1950. One look at this photo and you will immediately have an impression of how magnificant the building and grounds once appeared in contrast to the present.
